I’m reviewing footage from my last gig. I’ve been trying to record sets to review and improve, and there are some GLARING THINGS about this footage which I will not post lol…

  • A good example of bad lighting

  • red backdrops for these red bones- LORD?

  • this jacket is dishonorably discharged from my closet.

  • My notes from the gig prior to this WORKED?

I confess, I review my performances Friday Night Lights style sometimes. It should be implied but I've been doing that for a while. The intent is content, but I’ve had less actual social media posts posts and more sleeplessnightsthinkingaboutharddrivespace. Whatever. Anyway. Now that I’m in my own place maybe I’d indulge in a bit weed and some scotch, and… ya know… take some notes. Capture ideas, inspiration, and critiques.

Something I noticed about taking my time with blending and FX really painting a picture. I’m a synesthetic, meaning I’ll always have a visual representation when hearing things. What’s below is NOT that, but an exaggerated example of what tapping into that can be…

“'Walking through the city, each block with their own block party. As I continue, there is a point where I can stand between two blocks, with both parties being heard equally and simultaneously. Some elements could be working, but overall this is a harsh and overwhelming experience, and to ease the transition some EQ and reverb can be used to enhance and elongate the experience, easing the change from one block/song to the next. Visually, [being in the mind’s eye and/or synesthetically] as we get closer to the next block, the old block and it's party.. Or song.. Is growing distant. With this, it’s reverberating off the buildings and you’d notice some frequencies have been lost listening in the true natural world.”

The true life experience above can't be duplicated, but it can be impersonated. I have to say, the first quarter of this particular set really exemplified that. Couldn’t be happier with a result! The gig itself never seemed to quite find it’s feet- but we all do our best. Guests included lol. Sometimes you’ve got all the ingredients and intentions for a french omelet, but it becomes a diner style scrambler. Sometimes that's life. Everybody's gotta eat though, so pass me the Tapatio.
